Rising Sun runs FREE workforce development programs to develop energy
and water conservation skills. You don't need prior work experience
to join our programs, and English need not be your first language.

Not sure where you're headed? If you're between the ages of 18 and 24, live in Oakland, Berkeley, or Richmond, and want to break into the green economy but need a boost towards a productive life and career, East Bay Green Job Corps is for you. It will serve as a 'bridge' to get you into further education, technical training or apprenticeship, or an entry-level job. It's open to you even if you haven't done well in school, have been in tough situations, or want support in achieving your personal and professional goals.
What is East Bay Green Job Corps?
East Bay Green Job Corps (EBGJC) is a free training and education program designed to help young adults (ages 18-24) get the skills they need to enter green careers. EBGJC is a collaboration between Rising Sun Energy Center, Solar Richmond, and Berkeley City College.
How does it work?
East Bay Green Job Corps is a 16-week bridge program that combines classroom and fieldwork experience. During the 16 weeks, you will attend academic classes in the morning at Berkeley City College, and participate in training workshops and internships in the afternoon.
By participating in EBGJC, you will:
- Learn job readiness and leadership skills
- Improve your math and English skills
- Practice your computer skills
- Participate in energy efficiency and solar internships
- Earn a stipend
- Practice mindfulness techniques and yoga practices
- Build eco-literacy and civic engagement
- Earn 10.5 units of college credit (non-transferable)
- Improve your professional and customer service skills
Where does EBGJC take you?
East Bay Green Job Corps can lead to community college, vocational training programs, union apprenticeships, or employment. East Bay Green Job Corps staff will work with you to develop an individual plan and help you reach your educational and career goals.

Location: Mornings are at Berkeley City College in downtown Berkeley, afternoons are in Richmond
Dates: February 13 to June 1, 2012
Times: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
What are the basic qualifications for participating in East Bay Green Job Corps?
You must be able to commit to the full 16 weeks of the program, be motivated to succeed as a college student, and have an interest in gaining valuable skills and work experience. You must also meet our eligibility requirements:
- Age 18-24
- Resident of Berkeley, Richmond, or Oakland
- Drivers license/State ID and Social Security Card
- Low-income
- 7th grade math/reading level (demonstrated through an assessment)
- High school diploma/GED
- Reliable transportation to get you to and from the program every day, on time (you will receive a bus pass)
- Eligible for BOG Fee Waiver/financial aid
- Consistent child care (if applicable)

Are you prepared to move into a green career? GETS provides free classroom and hands-on training for entry-level jobs in energy efficiency and Building Performance. GETS Eligibility requirements:
- 18 years old or older
- Resident of Richmond or Berkeley
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- 8th grade reading, reading comprehension, writing, and math level
- Valid California Drivers License
- Legally eligible to work in the United States
- Low-income or unemployed
- Stable living situation
- Reliable transportation to and from training
- Expressed desire to enter the workforce upon completion of training
